Oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction are key factors in the development of this disease, and both affect the levels of multiple proteins related with the mitochondria. The objective of this study has been comparing the levels of the proteins of the electron transport chain OXPHOS (complexes from I to V) and of proteins related to antioxidant defence and mitochondrial function (UCP5 and PGC1α) in biopsies of tumoral and peritumoral tissue of patients with colon cancer in stage III and IV. It has been observed that said proteins decrease their levels in colon cancer in the studied stages, mostly in stage IV, and thus they could be used as biomarkers of the evolution of colorectal cancer. However, it is necessary to continue this investigation to achieve better results, since human samples hold high variability, which has had an influence in the determinations performed in this study.
