[eng] Atelerix algirus vagans, the subespecies of the algerian hedgehog that live in the Balearic Islands, is a little mammal with numerous protective figures. The main threats this species has to confront are parasitic diseases and road accidents. In this work, an unknown acanthocephala larva has been identified. It was found both in peritoneal cavity and in the intestine of the hedgehogs. The identification was performed from the combined application of morphological and molecular techniques, including the DNA barcoding approach using the Cytochrome C Oxidase I (COI) gene. This parasite is reported for the first time in the COFIB (Consortium for the recovery of the wild fauna of the Balearic Islands) in 2014 and since then 11 parasitized specimens have been found. The acanthocephala larva has been identified as a cystacanth of Plagiorhynchus cylindraceus. It is the first report of this species for both this host and the Balearic Islands. In addition, the role of this host in its cycle is analyzed as well as the possibility of the establishment of the parasite in the Balearic ecosystem and in Spain. |
