[eng] The study of the organisms that form a population is important to know about how it is
made up, for example how many males, females that contribute to the population status.
One of the most common techniques to obtain information about a population is the
capture-mark-recapture(CMR) technics. In order to study animals one by one, it is important
to have a method that allows you to successfully recognise the same subject repeatedly.
The most common technique to carry out this recognition involves the artificial and relatively
invasive marking of individuals before releasing them again. But there are non-invasive
methods that can be used to carry out CMR studies. These are methods of photo
identification, which acquire great importance in eliminating manipulation and its possible
negative effects. Many species present natural marks that allow the comparison and
differentiation between individuals. There are many computer softwares that make possible
to compare these marks in photographies.
This paper aims to validate photo-identification through the free "Automatic Photo
Identification Suite" software (APHIS), as a valid methodology for studying populations of
Hippocampus guttulatus. This seahorse, present in the Mediterranean Sea, is cataloged as a
deficient data specie (DD) and also as an species in special regime of protection. To validate
this method and be able to know more about this species, two groups of individuals (control
and wild) are studied to be able to show that the chosen marks are permanent and different
in each subject. Two methodologies are used to differentiate seahorses according to the
marks of their cheeks, Spots Pattern Matching (SPM) and Image template matching (ITM).
Both methodologies show good results, supporting the inicial hypothesis that it is possible
to use this method with H .guttulatus, although the ITM methodology shows facilities for the
operator that are reflected with reductions of working time.
