[eng] The proportion of patients per nurse has consequences in the clinical hospital setting, both in the patient, in the system and in the workers. The present review of the literature intends to analyze if the proportion of patients for each nurse at the hospital level, the so-called nurse-patient ratio, has repercussions on the patient, as far as morbidity is concerned, and if that is the case, what is the type of associated morbidity? Articles were searched in 8 databases between the years 2008 and 2018 in any language. Out of a total of 122 articles selected, only 23 met the inclusion criteria. All articles found are prevalence articles and most use large database records. Higher levels of nursing staff are associated with falls and urinary tract infections, although no associations were found with the other outcomes studied: Pressure ulcers, pneumonia, unjustified containment, sepsis, failure to rescue and infections. |
