[eng] Gliomas are the principal type of primary brain tumors, of which the glioblastoma is the most frequent
and malignant. Despite the scientific advances in recent decades, glioblastomas have a terrible
prognosis and the effectiveness of combined treatment of surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy is
poor. Therefore, research is carried out in order to increase the life expectancy of about 14 months from
the moment of diagnosis. Antipsychotics are drugs that are used mainly in patients with psychiatric
disorders, but there are some studies which also have demonstrated that they have an antineoplastic
potential. Consequently, it is intended to perform a bibliographic research on the possible role of
antipsychotic drugs as anti-tumors in gliomas. The data in experimental models indicate that the
repositioning of these drugs could be effective in the treatment of glioblastomas and be viable
candidates as chemotherapeutic adjuvants for their ability to cross the blood-brain barrier and to be
approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
