[eng] An increasing sensitivity about the negative effect that industrial and human activities have on
the environment and public health has led to the development of new strategies to mitigate the
impact that these activities have on the environment, having become one of the most important
social challenges today. Among the proposed strategies to reduce these negative effects and
ensure compliance of the environmental quality standards, the development of materials for
the extraction and degradation of environmental pollutants is a promising alternative.
Bearing these in mind, we have prepared porous carbons and titanium oxides from a MIL-125-
NH2 metal-organic framework by the calcination at different temperatures, in inert atmosphere
or in air, respectively. These materials have been characterized by powder X-ray diffraction,
electron microscopy, thermogravimetry and nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms
measured at 77 K, to select the best adsorbent and photocatalyst.
The application of the selected carbon (C-MIL-125-1000) for the extraction of 4-nitrophenol has
been studied. The carbon exhibit fast adsorption kinetics and a maximum adsorption capacity
of 87 mg/g of 4-nitrophenol, and it is also an easily recyclable material that maintains its
extraction capacity after various adsorption-desorption cycles. On the other hand, one of
titanium oxides, TiO2-MIL-125-450, has been used for the photocatalytic degradation of
methylene blue. The selected material achieves the complete degradation of the pollutant in a
reduced time (3 hours), thus demonstrating its photocatalytic efficiency.
