La biotecnologia com a disciplina artística: Eduardo Kac, Joe Davis i The Tissue Culture and Art Project

Abstract

[cat] L’art biotecnològic és aquell que utilitza mètodes científics d’enginyeria genètica per a crear obres d’art vives. Aquesta disciplina es va desenvolupar en els darrers anys del segle XX i principis del segle XXI, tot i que es reconeix a Steichen com a principal precedent. Aquest treball de fi de grau analitza aquesta corrent artística que s’emmarca dins el bioart i que es pot considerar com una de les avantguardes del segle XXI, de la mà d’alguns dels artistes més rellevants: Eduardo Kac, Joe Davis, Oron Katts i Ionat Zurr, de The Tissue Culture and Art Project. Aquests pioners, cada un d’una forma distinta, han adoptat els processos de l’enginyeria genètica, convertint els laboratoris en espais de creació artística i substituint els llenços pel material genètic, com l’ADN i els teixits vius.

[eng] Biotechnological art uses scientific genetic engineering methods to create living artworks. This artistic discipline was developed by the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st, although Steichen is recognized as the pioneer. This paper analyses this artistic movement, which is part of bioart, and can be considered one of the 21st century avant-gardes, with some of the most relevant artists: Eduardo Kac, Joe Davis, Oron Katts and Ionat Zurr, from the Tissue Culture and Art Project. All these pioneers, each one in a different way, have adopted genetic engineering processes, transforming laboratories in artistic spaces and replacing canvases for genetic material, such as DNA and living tissues.
