[eng] This study aims to analyse the Balearic tourism sector winners and losers as a result of the business model changes. The new information and communication technologies (TIC) allow the appearance of new intermediaries, low-cost companies, peer-to-peer platforms and generate a change in the tourist and its way of travel. All these changes affect big and small firms and their workers, alter the receiving community’s well being and means a challenge for the administration in order to keep the destination competitive. The excess of tourists in the Balearic Islands, the disappearance of traditional tour operators, the growing importance of on-line intermediaries and the rise of new types of accommodation puts in doubt the survival of the sector on the long run.
