[eng] Cereals are the main source of calories for most of the human population. Due to population growth, it is estimated that by 2050 it will need twice its production, but it is predicted that, by the same year, the drought induced by climate change will reduce its production efficiency by 50%, which means a big problem on a global scale. Given this situation. Given this situation, there are many studies that try to remedy this problem. One proposal is to regulate the concentration of phytohormones involved in the drought response of cereal plants. This paper reviews the literature obtained so far in relation to the regulation of the phytohormone cytokinin as a possible solution and its biotechnological application to the development of drought-tolerant cereal crops. Both the increase in the concentration of CKs in the aerial parts and their decrease in the roots have been shown to have a positive effect on the efficiency of cereal cultivation due to their pleiotropic nature. Adaptations that lead to improved efficiency include the regulation of the plant’s water balance, photosynthetic machinery, growth, antioxidant defense, and modification of gene expression of drought-responsive genes. Still, there is much missing information and many more tests are needed to elucidate the mechanisms
of action involved, as well as their possible coordination with other molecules of interest such as ethylene or abscisic acid in order to develop drought-tolerant crops, the solution to a global problem.
