[eng] In chronobiology, circadian rhythms have been the most studied, specifically, the sleep-wake cycle. Sleep is considered an essential function for life, so its deprivation could have serious consequences both physically and physiologically. Different studies have shown that total sleep deprivation in rats, through methods such as constant exercise, causes stress. Furthermore, the necropsy of these animals shows physiological alterations and tissue lesions. Although the results of these experiments have determined that sleep is considered essential for life, they have been discussed due to the difficulty of separating the effects of sleep deprivation from those caused by stress inherent in the methods used to prevent sleep.
For these reasons, this study aims to minimize the stress caused by the sleep deprivation method, in order to obtain more reliable results that correspond to the effects of the deprivation itself. For this, three groups of animals will be formed and they will receive feed mixed with different doses of modafinil. The rate of locomotive activity/inactivity of the three groups will be recorded and compared with a control group. In this way, it is expected to detect whether the cause of sleep rebound after deprivation is due to stress or to lack of sleep.
