[eng] Water use efficiency (WUE) is a generic term to refers water used in plant metabolism
to water lost by the plant. Measuring directly on leaves, the intrinsic -or photosyntheticWUE (WUEi) is defined as the ratio of the net CO2 assimilation and the stomatal
conductance. On a more integrative scale over time, it is possible to analyze the isotopic
carbon discrimination of a given tissue, and it has been shown that the 12C/13C ratio is
mathematically related to the average WUEi
when the C was fixed. Thus, the main
objective of the present work was to observe if the isotopic proportion of 13C is a good
indicator to analyze the variations in water use efficiency in comparison with WUEi
.
For this purpose, different collections of genotypes in vines have been studied:
Tempranillo in different locations, Tempranillo on different rootstocks (T- rootstocks),
and genotypes of the Garnacha variety. The test was carried out on different plots
(Roda, Vitis Navarra and La Granjera) during the summer of 2018. In all cases, the
plants were cultivated without irrigation, with a total of 39 genotypes. This study
constitutes a first comparative approximation between two parameters, and shows that
the use of isotopic carbon discrimination can be an alternative parameter to measure
WUE in the field, due to it is a parameter that reflects the average water state over a
longer period of time. Besides, dry mass carbon isotope composition reflects greater
discrimination between different locations respect WUEi
.
A otra escala
