[eng] Cancer is one of the most relevant diseases of the 21st century for the human species. Millions of cases are reported annually ending the lives of many people. Prolonged longevity and strong exposure to mutagenic agents have made us more likely to suffer from it. An innovative approach to cancer is proposed based on evolutionary biology to provide interesting new perspectives in the search for a cure. A historical analysis of the disease is conducted and the key factors in the onset of human cancer are reviewed. Two possible approaches to the evolution of cancer have been identified: firstly, the evolution of the defense mechanisms that deal with the disease in different animal species, and secondly, the evolution of cancer throughout its spread in the individual suffering from it. In conclusion, the need to increase the number of studies dealing with cancer with an evolutionary biology perspective is clear. It emphasizes the need to focus on individuals phylogenetically closer to us for a better understanding of the defense mechanisms and their origins. Moreover, regarding possible treatments, there is a need to consider the environment where the neoplasm resides in order to condition its evolution.
