[eng] Prostitution affects women’s physical and mental health, making them an unprotected sector of society. However, there is now a clear increase in the prostitution consumption. In fact, according to the Institut Balear de la Dona (2018) only in the Balearic Islands there are more than 100.000 male consumers of prostitution. There are also many prejudices about prostitution, several of which relate to the freedom of prostituted women. In this non-systematic literature review, and from an abolitionist standpoint, it has been studied from the social cognition whether the belief on the freedom of decision of women in prostitution influences the justification of the consumption of these supposed services. The results show that the myth of free choice, although used as a justification for the consumption of prostitution, is not a determining factor because consumers of prostitution do not give much importance to the freedom and consent of women in prostitution contexts.
