[eng] Peripheral neuropathy is a highly prevalent condition, particularly in older populations.
This disease affects patients by causing pain, decreased quality of life, falls, ulcerations,
and amputations. Unfortunately, outside of medications for neuropathic pain, there are
few therapies to help patients with peripheral neuropathy. That said, the main objective
of this work is to know the causes of peripheral neuropathy in patients with insulin
resistance and its treatments so far known, since we find ourselves with a care problem
when a patient is not diagnosed with diabetes, but nevertheless has high levels of insulin
resistance above the normal value and already has symptoms, attention is not paid.
In the bibliographic search, 64 studies were found, of which 11 of interest were included
based on the topic to be investigated. Of the 11 studies, there are 4 that study the cause of
peripheral neuropathy, 2 on the effects of physical exercise in the pathology, 3 that study
on the effects of nutrition in this problem, 1 on a type of neuropathy with a high
prevalence in this population such as plantar fasciitis and 1 on an alternative treatment to
physiotherapy such as botulinum toxin.
In conclusion, calorie restriction and correct nutritional balance together with oxidativetype
physical exercise combined with strength exercise have shown the best results in
terms of reducing the level of pain and quality of life of the patient.
