[eng] The label intersex designates the group of individuals who do not fit into the sexual dichotomy
naturalized in the Western hegemonic discourse. This culturally heterogeneous group of individuals
has been categorized from a biomedical point of view as non-normative. The term intersex has
been productive in Cultural and Gender Studies as it challenges the gender binary status quo. These
processes of Othering have resulted in a sociocultural stigmatization of the collective. This analysis
examines the strong correlation between the recurrently identified in the literature as the toxic
trinity—silence, at an institutional level; secrecy, at an individual level; and isolation, at a social
one—, and the unintelligibility they produce. Since the 1990s, fictional and biographical narratives
have depicted a representation permeated by this prescribed structure which sustains social
invisibility, through complex tools of repression that enhance the collective negative affects rooted
in and sustained by shame. However, the turn of the century has brought a shift in the
representation of intersex individuals in the narratives that depart from a monolithic biomedical
standpoint to a multilayered sociocultural one. Despite this, Viola Amato (2014) identified the
failure of U.S. television productions to portray such change. Nevertheless, this Thesis analyzes
how this biomedical archetype is challenged in Faking It, a mainstream TV series, in which the
intersex character Lauren Cooper is developed. The TV series develops an intersex gaze which
allows on the one hand, to identify, interpret and confront the prototypical sociocultural challenges
faced by individuals with intersex corporealities, while on the other hand, allows her to break free
from the impositions of the toxic trinity through an increasing feeling of pride, that empowers her
agency through a process of (re)negotiation.
Označenie intersex označuje skupinu jednotlivcov, ktorí nezapadajú do sexuálnej dichotómie
naturalizovanej v západnom hegemonickom diskurze. Táto kultúrne heterogénna skupina
jednotlivcov bola z biomedicínskeho hľadiska zaradená medzi nenormatívne. Termín intersex je v
kultúrnych a rodových štúdiách produktívny, pretože spochybňuje súčasný stav rodového
binarizmu.
podporuje sociálnu neviditeľnosť kolektívu, a to prostredníctvom komplexných nástrojov represie,
populárnom televíznom seriáli Faking It, v ktorom je vyvinutá intersexuálna postava Lauren
Cooper.
No obstante,
