[eng] Tourism is a sector with the obligation to constantly innovate and can be
conditioned by aspects that slow down this evolution, as is the case of the
political factors, such as Brexit; social factors, as the current COVID-19
pandemic; or economic factors, like the 2008 crisis. This means that it is an
industry directly affected by different adversities in a very short time, which
tourism companies must know how to face and, as a consequence, reinvent
themselves in order to generate high-impact transformations on society.
Databases and graphs show the changes in people’s preferences regarding
their tastes and motivations for travelling in recent years, whether for cultural,
religious, gastronomic o ecological interests. This last aspect is one the most
important concerns nowadays due to climate change, so the tourism sector has
to become aware of the situation and we will see how it will adapt to the new
reality. Therefore, this study will describe the characteristics of eco-labels,
which are certifications for sustainable tourism establishments; new companies
dedicated to tourism, also called players; projects promoted by official bodies,
for instance Hotel Energy Solutions (HES) and, additionally, some examples of
innovative destinations in terms of eco-tourism will be covered, as the Balearic
Islands and, more broadly, Germany. Finally, the impacts of the current
pandemic due to COVID-19 and the adaptation of new technological resources
as a fundamental challenge in the framework of tourism sustainability will be
highlighted.
