[eng] Obesity is considered a disease, as well as a chronic and persistent state of
inflammation with a high cardiovascular and metabolic risk. It is suggested that the body
mass index (BMI) begins to be insufficient to assess or adequately manage the
cardiometabolic risk associated with the increase in adiposity that obesity presents.
General objective:
To evaluate the efficacy of different anthropometric indices as predictors of the
Metabolic Syndrome and its components in menopausal and obese women living in
Palma de Mallorca.
Specific goal:
. To determine the prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome and its components in the
studied menopausal obese women.
. To determine the degree of association between the variables studied and the patients
with Metabolic Syndrome and those without Metabolic Syndrome.
Material and method:
A cross-sectional study will be carried out in menopausal and obese women (BMI ≥ 30
kg / m2) who attend a consultation for weight loss, in Clinics and Health Centers in
Palma de Mallorca. Anthropometric measurements will be made: weight, height,
abdominal circumference and hip circumference. The Body Mass Index (BMI), Waist
Hip Index (ICC) and the new anthropometric indices to study will be calculated: Waist /
Height Index, Visceral Adiposity Index and Estimated Body Adiposity Index. Menopause
will be defined as the transition period between reproductive and non-reproductive age
of women, characterized by the absence of menstruation in 12 consecutive months and
with the loss of ovulation and the suppression of estrogen production. Blood pressure
figures will be recorded, metabolic and biochemical parameters and the patient's
medical history will be studied taking into account a history of endocrine metabolic and
cardiovascular disease, as well as the time of evolution of obesity. The Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) will be defined according to the NCEP ATP III criteria, which consist
of meeting 3 or more of the following components: CA> 88 cm in women, fasting
glucose> 100 mg / dl and / or treatment antidiabetic; triglyceride levels> 150 mg / dl and
/ or lipid-lowering treatment; HDL-C levels <50 in women; systolic blood pressure> 130
mmHg and / or diastolic blood pressure> 85 mmHg and / or antihypertensive treatment.
