[eng] BACKGROUND: There are many types of cancer that can be prevented by
changing your lifestyle. Continuously increasing trends in malignancies related to
bad habits, such as poor diet and physical inactivity, make this disease a public
health priority. Performing physical exercise and including healthy foods in the
diet not only helps reduce the risk of cancer, but also promotes greater tolerance
to treatment, improves quality of life and symptoms related to the disease and
chemotherapy. HYPOTHESIS: Following a Mediterranean diet and performing
resistance exercises reduces adverse effects (weight loss, loss of muscle
strength, neuropathy, anemia, diarrhea ...) of chemotherapy treatment in patients
with colon cancer, compared to patients receiving treatment and showing low
adherence to the Mediterranean diet. OBJECTIVE: To determine if the
Mediterranean diet and strength training reduce the sequelae of chemotherapy
in patients with colon cancer. METHODOLOGY: Randomized experimental
study, with a control group and an experimental group. This is a sample of 226
patients of both sexes diagnosed with colon cancer, from the oncological day
hospital of the Hospital General Universitario Santa Lucía, Cartagena. The
patients, aged between 30 and 50 years, will start chemotherapy treatment. The
sample will be divided into two groups of 113 members, one of them will follow a
Mediterranean diet and perform strength exercises, and the other will only be
given general recommendations. A first interview will be carried out to gain
knowledge of variables such as anthropometric measurements, body
composition, intestinal habit, muscle strength, state of the peripheral nervous
system, and blood hemoglobin levels. Subsequently, follow-ups will be carried
out until the end of the study. The data collected between the two groups will be
compared to conclude whether the Mediterranean diet and strength training
improve the symptoms caused by chemotherapy.
