intensivos.
[eng] Critically ill patients require a special nutritional regimen due to the numerous
changes that affect their health status and, therefore, the correct choice of a diet
through an enteral or parenteral route is essential to prevent malnutrition and stay in
Intensive Care Units (ICU). The main scope of this project is to evaluate the factors
that influence the decision to choose a type of enteral or parenteral nutrition in the adult
patient admitted to the ICU. The secondary objectives would be to review the existence
of a protocol that determines the interventions and that reduces their execution time
and to assess whether there is a difference in mortality and hospital stay when
choosing the parenteral route compared to enteral. The project will be designed as a
descriptive prospective observational study in which the nutrition of long-term adult
patients hospitalized in intensive care units will be programmed and analyzed. The
results show the existence of a hight risk of infections and complications in the
parenteral route compared to the enteral route, and that is why it is used in the
majority. There are no major differences in mortality between the two routes.
