[eng] This final degree project analyses the configuration of the maritime sector in
Palma before the Spanish Civil War. The study focuses on the neighborhood of
Santa Catalina, where a considerable part of the seafarer community lived. The
register of inhabitants of 1935 shows the demographical structure of the families
related to the sea, the professions of their members, the female tax activity of
such occupations, their salaries, and their literacy levels. All these factors suggest
some of the conditions in the maritime sector. In addition, they allow a starting
explanation for an apparent retreat, coinciding with the industrialization of the
neighborhood at the beginning of the 20th century.
