Placenames comprise cultural heritage that reflects the geographical features of the terrain, its historical evolution, linguistic strata from past peoples and cultures, and the perception and idiosyncrasy of their respective societies. In insular regions such as the Balearic Islands, isolation accentuates cultural characteristics that can also be seen in unique geographic terminology in toponymic generics. A study of these enables us to characterise each of the islands by analysing the results of collected terminology that contributes to shaping the cultural identity of each of the islands in the archipelago, as well as offering, as a whole, some keys to understanding island personality
