[eng] Lorenzo Valla’s grammatical treatise, Elegantie lingue latine, is known to have been edited and revised several times by its author. Within the broad manuscript and printed tradition of the treatise, we find witnesses that bear marks of these revisions, such as updates of the quotations, susbtantial changes in definitions or the organization of chapters. The aim of this article is to identify and explore the changes in chapter I 4, from the first to the last stages of the work. In order to trace the evolution of this chapter, we will examine a substantial part of the manuscript tradition of the Elegantie and divide it into three separate groups : a first redaction, a second version represented by manuscript El Escorial, BRMSL, M.III.13, in which we find autograph comments by Valla, and the final work. Also, the text of the three versions of chapter I 4 will be presented and examined from different angles. The analysis and comparison of the differences in chapter I 4 give an insight into the Elegantie’s complex composition process.
