[eng] Introduction: The mother-father-child bond must continue to be strengthened even when the
baby is admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), one of the ways of achieving
this is opening the doors of the NICU so parents can establish and maintain this bond.
Objective: To analyze national and international literature related to parents and/or relatives
staying in the NICU.
Search strategy: bibliography search was made on PUBMED, IBECS, EBSCOhost, CUIDEN
PLUS and CSIC database using the following keywords: Neonatology, Family, Parent,
Parents visit, Neonatal Intensive Care, Care focused on development and Kangaroo care. Limitations were set between years 2004 and 2014 and languages were limited to English,
Spanish and Catalan. 21 anticles were found in this first search. A second search was made
and results were included from clinic practice guides and recommendations from political,
scientific and professional organizations.
Discussion: From literature analysis conclusions were extracted on benefits and drawbacks of
parents staying in the NICU for themselves, newborn and professionals; as well as the main
recommendations or guidelines for clinical practice by care focused on development
associations and organizations, incluiding recommendation for a decree law on the Boletín
Oficial de la Junta de Andalucía about underaged’s right to be accompanied, including a
decree law on the “Boletín Oficial de la Junta de Andalucía” about underaged’s right to be
acompanied.
Conclusions: The natural environment of the child is his family and it wouldn’t be necessary
to prove or justify the benefits of the family remaining together.
