The economic dependence of tourism in the Balearic Islands

Abstract

[eng] Tourism has become one of the most important economic, social and cultural activities for many developing countries around the world. But tourism has both positive and negative aspects. On the one hand tourism generates employment, foreign currencies and stimulates economic growth. On the other hand tourism is related to multiple externalities being environmental impacts the most popular ones. Because of the generalization of the tourism activity around the world, this study aims to analyze the economic dependence in the Balearic Islands. The study will be centralized in observing the different methodologies and overall in evaluating the economic impact of tourism in this region. Moreover, it will be also analyzed the environmental problems of tourism.

[spa] El turismo se ha convertido en una de las actividades económicas, sociales y culturales más importantes para una gran cantidad de países desarrollados alrededor del mundo. Sin embargo, el turismo, tiene tanto aspectos positivos como negativos. Por un lado, genera empleo, divisa extranjera y estimula el crecimiento económico. Por otro lado, está estrechamente relacionado con múltiples externalidades, siendo los impactos medioambientales los más importantes. A causa de la generalización de la actividad turística en el mundo, este estudio pretende analizar la dependencia económica en las Islas Baleares. El estudio estará centrado en observar las diferentes metodologías y sobre todo en evaluar el impacto económico del turismo en esta provincial. Además, se analizarán los problemas medioambientales del turismo.
