[eng] This work presents an analysis of the sector of renting vehicles without driver.
The fundamental aspect of this analysis will be the calculation of the
competitiveness and the efficiency of the sector; Which will be analyzed using
the CLUR (Unitary Real Labor Costs) index.
The sector began practically at the same time as the birth of the car. Hertz and
Sixt were the pioneers in the rental car business.
The rent a car belongs to the services sector.
Using the 4 research parameters of the SWOT tool we can estimate that these
types of companies have: as Weaknesses: cost-opportunity; as Threats: dependence on the seasonal sector; The struggle with a global
offer that increases competitiveness; as Strengths: Its good location in tourist areas and good climate that favor the
consumption of the service; as Opportunities: the evidence that it is a growing sector and in the process of
specialization and the fact that there is tourist supply and demand all year
round.
It is a business area that has evolved over time. The international crisis of 2007
meant the distribution of the Market in 5 multinational companies and a
thousand smaller companies operating in the Spanish sector.
During the recession, economic dynamics in Spain was a declining GDP
coupled with a rising unemployment rate; This combination left the country, and
therefore also this sector very affected. Spain was one of the countries that
suffered most in the EU / EEC.
Although tourism suffered during the crisis, it managed to remain afloat,
including tourist GDP, above national GDP in the years 2006-2016.
The driverless vehicle rental sector and its most important companies in general
had lower productivity during 2008 and 2009 but were able to adjust operating
income to their labor costs to lower the CLUR index in the following years and
their market efficiency. The only company that behaved differently was Sixt
where its best levels of productivity took place at the beginning of the years of
reser- vation.
The Internet and insurance companies have had an essential role in this market
and today you can not imagine a sector without these two elements.
The car rental companies in each rental vehicle include an extra cost of
insurance coverage in relation to the insurance premium charged by insurers to
individuals.
