[eng] The construction of a railway in an island territory marked by a growing commercial and industrial dynamism can only be understood in light of the intention to connect the local industry and commerce with foreign markets. Until the mid-twentieth century, the port of Palma was almost the only means of arrival and departure of manufactured goods, food products and industrial inputs on the island of Mallorca. However, the connection between the rail system and the port had to overcome a major obstacle: the city of Palma and its belt of walls that stood between the railway and the docks. This paper analyzes both the vicissitudes of articulating the basic railway network and its influence on city planning and location of industries and services. [spa] La construcción de un ferrocarril en un territorio insular caracterizado por un creciente dinamismo comercial e industrial, solo puede entenderse en la medida que se proponga conectar las industrias y el comercio local con los mercados exteriores. Hasta mediados del siglo XX, el puerto de Palma fue casi la única vía de salida y de entrada de manufacturas, productos agroalimentarios e inputs industriales en la isla de Mallorca. Sin embargo, la conexión entre el sistema ferroviario insular y el puerto, tuvo que sortear un obstáculo de envergadura: la propia ciudad de Palma y su cinturón de murallas que se interponía entre el ferrocarril y los muelles. En este trabajo se analizan tanto las vicisitudes de la articulación de la red ferroviaria básica como su influencia en el urbanismo de la ciudad y en la localización de industrias y servicios. |
