[eng] In this work, different metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) of the ZIF-67 and MIL-100 families have
been synthetized at room temperature and their derived porous carbons have been obtained
by calcination of the MOF in inert atmosphere and subsequent acid treatment of the carbon so
obtained. These materials have been characterized by appropriate instrumental techniques
such as X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and physical
adsorption of gases at 77 K.
Commercial melamine-formaldehyde sponges have been covered with the acid-treated MOFderived carbons. The crystallographic and morphological characterization has confirmed that
the staining method used for their preparation allows the correct wetting of the sponges with
the porous carbons.
The obtained sponges are highly hydrophobic and oleophilic, with contact angles close to 140°.
The evaluation of the prepared sponges for oil removal from water has shown that these hybrid
materials can effectively and selectively separate different oils from water, showing remarkable
absorption capacities as well as good recyclability. In addition, the applicability for oil/water
separation of MFS-c-MIL-100(Fe)-HCl sponge using two different separation systems and a real
water sample have been tested.
Therefore, the obtained results suggest that sponges impregnated with MOF-derived carbons
might be potential candidates for oil/water separation |
