[eng] In this study, the materials and approach of teaching Prehistory of the Balearic
Islands has been examined to evaluate its effectiveness in providing an engaging,
accurate and effective education. The current state of the art was evaluated
through the analysis of textbooks, which are the standard way in which the
curriculum is translated into the classroom. Analysis of these materials reveal that
the content being taught is significantly outdated and are taught in a manner
which does not encourage students to question how the historical narrative has
been built from the supporting Archaeological data.
To address these issues new educational materials have been designed. In so,
a broader view of the historical discourse on this subject is provided. This text
provides the most recent knowledge on the Prehistory of the Balearic Islands,
and has been written to actively encourage students to critically examine the
historical discourse through examining the archaeological data that supports it.
As an alternative method of teaching, six activities have been designed that cover
the same material and have been designed to show the relationship between the
historical discourse and the data that supports it and connect with the
archaeological heritage and landscape of the islands.
Altogether, this flexible proposal can be a dynamic alternative to textbooks, as it
can adapt to the needs of each teacher, while sorting out some of the
shortcomings of these materials
