[eng] Most of our actions are affected by the expectations of our environment, this
correspondence with our behaviour is represented in the unconscious and affects the way
in which we develop.
The Pygmalion effect or self-fulfilling prophecy is, according to Merton (1970), a
situation that does not exist, which leads to a new behaviour, which will make real, the
previous concept that originally was not real. This effect starts from the full trust that
someone places in another to achieve a future positive result; the higher the expectation,
the better results will be obtained unconsciously.
Students’ interactions with their school environment have implications that aren’t just
limited to the transmission of content, but also significantly related to emotions,
perceptions, and the relationships with others.
That’s why these concepts will be studied, as well as self-esteem -being one of the most
important variables in the Pygmalion effect-, attitude, motivation, as well as selfconfidence
and the effects of being a positive Pygmalion.
In addition, we will analyse the learning expectations of 42 primary school teachers of
our country, using as independent variables their sex, age, years of experience and type
of school in which they work -public or private schools-.
Regarding all this information may help prevent future behaviours that could be harmful
for students' academic performance. In fact, those interested students will be able to
acquire tools while also motivating them and creating more humanized educational
environments.
