[eng] good physical appearance, particularly in old age, is very important for the physical,
mental and psychosocial well-being. In addition, it is easily seen and it is one of the
main signs of aging. Skin, like any other biological system, growths, matures and ages.
Skin aging causes changes in the structure and function of the skin, and UV radiation is
considered the major environmental factor that contributes to skin aging, what is known
as photoaging.
The aim of this study is the identification of genes and/or genetic variants associated
with skin photoaging, and the search for nutrients and/or bioactive compounds that
could affect these genes or could help to prevent, delay and/or reduce the signs of this
process.
A systematic literature search for genes, polymorphisms, nutrients and bioactive
compounds has been undertaken in PubMed, in order to establish a scientific
relationship between photoaging and nutrigenomics. This information will allow the
design of strategies that may prevent the development of skin photoaging.
The results show the existence of genetic variants that may promote or protect against
the development of skin aging induced by UV radiation, and of bioactive compounds
that could protect against the damage caused by UV radiation in the skin. However, it
has not been possible to find evidence of how such compounds may influence the
expression of these genes, so it cannot be determined a solid scientific relationship
between skin photoaging, genetics and diet. Even so, the results obtained allow to
develop the idea of this relationship between these three factors in individuals through
an application example.
cualquier sistema biológico, crece, madura y envejece.
