[eng] The turtle Caretta caretta is the most common sea turtle species on the coasts of the Balearic Islands and the entire Mediterranean Sea. It is considered a vulnerable species according to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and is included in Appendix I of CITES. Currently, it faces multiple threats caused mainly by humans, being the fishing gear, maritime traffic and pollution the most important. The evaluation of the biochemical response in immune cells, after suffering a stressful event that leads them to strand and enter a recovery center, based on the study of oxidative stress biomarkers can give information about the recovery process. The production of ROS, the activity of antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione reductase and glutathione peroxidase and the concentration of malondialdehyde, as a marker of lipid peroxidation, were chosen for evaluation. The decrease of these biomarkers was evidenced during the time of stay in the center, indicating that the recovery of the specimens has been positive and has been carried out effectively. |
