[eng] Oxidative stress is a key factor that has been linked to the development and evolution of many diseases, such as cancer. Nowadays, there are many research pathways in which antioxidants and their effect are being studied as a possible use as cancer treatment. In this study we wanted to determine the effect of genistein on the mitochondrial functionality and oxidative stress in colon cancer cells of a primary stage (HT29) and its possible usefulness as an adjuvant to oxaliplatin, a chemotherapy drug. It was observed that genistein had an effect of promoting mitochondrial biogenesis by the activation of the expression of genes related to mitochondrial biogenesis, as well as an interactive effect between the two compounds for the improvement of this process. This can be linked to a greater mitochondrial function. Oxidative stress was reduced with genistein treatment, but cellular viability was increased. Using it as an adjunct to oxaliplatin, the results have provided a greater survival than those obtained without genistein, so it would not be advisable to use it as an adjuvant. |
