[eng] Objective: To analyze the scientific evidence regarding the relationship of emotions and the process of well-being or malaise of a person with a chronic disease.
Methodology: Bibliographic research with specific inclusion and exclusion criteria in EBSCOhost, ISI Web of Science, PubMed / Medline and Scopus. 178 articles were found of which 27 were selected for the review.
Results: All selected articles describe a relationship between emotions and health or illness, which can be bidirectional or unidirectional. Sometimes the disease is the cause of the emotion and sometimes it is the opposite, the emotion is the cause of the disease. Negative emotions such as anxiety and depression were the most repeated. Some biological markers were modified when the patient felt specific emotions, which meant an improvement or a worsening of the disease. Depending on the type of disease and the stage, the emotions described oscillated and affected the well-being of the person to a greater or lower degree. Negative emotions were associated with a worse progression of the disease due to adherence to treatment while coping strategies were reduced.
Conclusion: Emotions and health or illness are associated to the process of malaise or personal well-being of the chronic patient. Negative emotions are more prevalent than positive emotions, which makes it difficult to adapt to the disease. Special emphasis is placed on the importance of psychological interventions to learn to self-regulate emotions and illnesses.
