[eng] The Muslim athlete faces unique challenges to strictly follow one of the pillars of his faith, Ramadan, which involves fasting from sunrise to sunset for 30 days. In this period, they must continue training and they may also be required to important competitive events while they have to maintain their faith in their religion.
It is a challenge for athletes -even more for those who live outside of their culture- to maintain sports performance and even overcome it, since not only an alteration in the schedule and distribution of food occurs, but also in the sleep-wake cycle and circadian rhythms. At the end of this review there will be some recommendations and strategies for athletes to follow individually if they really want to continue improving their physical performance, and thus counteract the challenges that the intermittent fasting of Ramadan involves.
As many concerns have been raised regarding the possible influence of the intermittent fasting of Ramadan on exercise performance, the aim of this review is to identify if there is an increase in athletic performance during the intermittent fasting of Ramadan and to know its effects on the organism, as well as what could happen with ketogenic diets. |
