dc.description.abstract [eng] The 18th-century Enlightenment brought about linguistic homogenisation policies in both Spain and France. Education, considered essential by intellectuals at the time, will become a tool with which to spread the language of the nation on the assumption that the understanding of this language would result in the understanding of, and, ultimately, compliance with the law. Catalan will be affected by this linguistic ideology and its implementation by the administrative apparatus of Charles III's court. This article addresses the response of the Majorcan institutions (Palma City Council and the University) in this context, providing previously unpublished evidence on the subject.
