[eng] : Even though the marine environment is featured by the presence of relentless ongoing
resourceful and fast processes, the current state of overexploitation and ecosystem decay suggests
the requirement for an upgraded management toolkit. Among the external drivers so far
unaddressed (or at least not properly) are the temporal and spatial variability or the intensity and
nature of the anthropic impacts especially regarding the fishing activities. The computerized
classification of vessels by the Automatic Identification System (AIS), implemented in all the fishing
vessels (>15m length), gives rise to an enhanced understanding of the circumstances and the
impact of the activities enforced over the marine environment. In the following research a new
monitoring and quantifying method of the human impacts is developed by including the spatial and
temporal variability within the AIS. As a practical example, the longline fleet from the western
Mediterranean basin was the subject of study. A dataset of 9.657.405 AIS locations for the period
comprised between June 21st and July 12th of 2017 was used and the fishing activity was mapped
by analysing 64 longline vessels´ trajectories estimated from the clustering algorithm EMBC, a
classifying movement ecology technique. The algorithm was validated with the data provided by the
Oceanographic Centre of Málaga (Centro Oceanográfico de Málaga). From all the computed
activities, a 93% spatio-temporal match was found among the trajectories and the actual fishing
activities. Out of them, an 83% were properly addressed as fishing activities showing the highest
concordance with the hauling operations (72%). The developed method provides up-to-date maps
dealing with the spatial distribution and activity of the l longline fleet in the Western Mediterranean
for the specified period. It also proves the functionality of these new monitoring systems for the
tools´ development sake within the marine management field.
