Ecology of the Noctuidae (Lepidoptera) in Mallorca (Balearic Islands): abundance, activity and food plants

[eng] The study of the Noctuidae ecology was performed from October 2017 and May 2018 every fortnight in two sites which differ in vegetation, distance to the sea and altitude: the Puig de Sant Salvador (SS) and the Parc Natural de Mondragó (PNM). The individuals of the 66 Noctuidae species, captured by using a light trap, were counted and collected in order to analyse the pollen attached to the moths’ proboscis. Then, diversity indexes were calculated and suggested that the diversity between sites in the same period of time importantly differed, as well as the number of species and the number of individuals, being higher in PNM than in SS. The Noctuidae activity decreases from October to February and then it rises again when temperatures also increase. Flight curves were obtained for all moth species, suggesting that most of them have two main peaks of activity, increasing exponentially in optimal conditions. The pollen analysis of the moths’ proboscis was performed of the individuals which had more than 5 pollen grains. This revealed that there are differences between moth species regarding to the percentage of individuals which carried pollen either between sites or among species found in the same place. Pollen analysis also suggested that moths interact with different plant taxa, agreeing with the fact that most of the plant-insect interactions are generalist.

[spa] El estudio de la ecología de los noctuidos (Noctuidae: Lepidoptera) se realizó entre Octubre 2017 y Mayo 2018 cada dos semanas en dos sitios de muestreo que diferían en la composición de la vegetación, la distancia al mar y la altitud: el Puig de Sant Salvador (SS) y el Parc Natural de Mondragó (PNM). Los individuos de las 66 especies de noctuidos, capturados mediante una trampa de luz, fueron contados y guardados para el análisis del polen adherido a su probóscide. De esta manera, se calcularon índices de diversidad que sugirieron que la diversidad a lo largo del tiempo en ambos lugares presentaba importantes diferencias, siendo mayor en PNM que en SS. La actividad de los noctuidos decrece entre octubre y febrero y aumenta de nuevo cuando las temperaturas también lo hacen. Las curvas de vuelo fueron obtenidas para todas las especies capturadas, sugiriendo que la mayoría de ellas presentan dos picos principales de actividad, incrementándose exponencialmente en condiciones óptimas. El análisis del polen adherido a la probóscide de los individuos se hizo de aquellos que presentaban más de 5 granos de polen. Esto reveló que hay diferencias entre especies de lepidóptero respecto al porcentaje de individuos que tenían polen, tanto entre los dos sitios de muestreo como entre especies presentes en el mismo lugar. El análisis del polen sugirió, asimismo, que los noctuidos interaccionan con diferentes taxones vegetales, de acuerdo con el hecho de que la mayoría de interacciones planta-insecto son de carácter generalista
