[eng] Introduction: Music therapy is a complementary therapy used in palliative care with the aim of improving the quality of life and offering patients and their families comprehensive care. The use of music therapy as a scientific discipline is relatively recent and has been developed over time, generating abundant benefits for patients and their families.
Objective: To determine the effect of music therapy on the reduction of pain in palliative care patients, as well as to know the experiences and sensations of relatives who attend music therapy therapies.
Methodology: For the work, a bibliographic search was made in three databases: Pubmed, Cinhal, and Lilacs. In addition, a controlled and free language was used, using the Boolean operators "AND" and "OR". The filters that were applied for the search in the databases were: chronological period of 10 years, English, Portuguese and Spanish language and using the inclusion and exclusion criteria for the final selection of the articles.
Results: 22 articles were obtained in which the effect that music therapy generates on the symptoms present in palliative care patients is evaluated. In addition, some of the articles relate the experiences lived by the relatives that attend the musical therapies and the effects that it generated in them.
Conclusion: The beneficial effects of music therapy on an emotional, social and physical level, such as pain and anxiety, on the patient and his family in palliative care have been seen, but there should be more research to know more about its effectiveness and thus get the most out of this complementary therapy.
