[eng] The image of women has been historically created and controlled by the male gaze in
the media and visual culture; stigmas that continue to cling to current society. Between
the sixties and seventies, a group of feminists will emerge and struggle to take control of
their own identity. Among these women will be Hannah Wilke (1940-1993), an artist
who will adopt the historical icons of femininity, reproducing them in an ironic and
critical way with the intention of demonstrating the reduction that masculine language
entails. Starting from this idea, our discourse will focus on two concepts: body
representation as a cause of conflict and physical documentation at the limit of its
destruction. Both are objects of criticism of the American society of the second half of
the twentieth century. |
