[eng] Introduction: The autonomy and empowerment of patients have become in recent years some of the fundamental principles of health care. Among them we find the issue of dignified death, how to get those patients who no longer have the capacity to decide to continue to preserve their autonomy and making decisions about their own health is one of the big questions that many professionals pose while exercising their profession. One of the legal methods at our disposal to answer this question is the Advanced Directives Document, in which the patient himself expresses the instructions to be taken into account when he is in a situation in which circumstances do not allow him to express personally his Will.
Objective: To analyze the level of current knowledge about the Advanced Directives Document (hereinafter ADD, DVA in Spanish) that health personnel have and what beliefs and attitudes they have about it.
Method: Narrative review through the bibliographic search of the last 10 years (2008-2018), in a free full text of review articles and originals that are in Spanish and English. The databases consulted were IBECS, Medline / PubMed and EBSCOhost. DeCS and MeSH terms combined with Boolean operators were used.
Results: In the final selection there were 22 articles included. 14 of them were original articles and 8 were bibliographic reviews. Most health professionals have knowledge about the existence of the Advanced Directives Document, despite this, they are unaware of aspects of the legislation and the content of itself. They usually show a favourable attitude towards the anticipated directives and show interest in increasing their expertise on the subject.
Conclusions: It would be interesting to better train the health personnel about the ADD and continue working on its correct dissemination, ensuring its application in cases where it is necessary.
