Medline, PEDro, IBECS y LILACS, SportDiscus, Academic Search y Cinahl, Cochrane
Library y ScienceDirect.
[eng] Introduction: Generally, a hamstring injury is an excessive stretching of the
myotendinous junction, being the biceps femoris the most commonly injured muscle.
These injuries are usually produced by non-contact mechanisms that occur frequently in
the terminal oscillation phase of a sprint. Being the most frequent diagnosis in football
and characterized by a high rate of recurrence, programs to prevent injuries in this area,
such as eccentric exercises, are necessary.
Objective: The objective of this review is to describe the effectiveness of eccentric
exercise to prevent hamstring injuries in footballers, analyzing the incidence and some
of their risk factors, the strength and two of its variables, Eccentric Peak Torque and
H/Q Ratio.
Methods: In April 2019 a review was made of the Medline, PEDro, IBECS and
LILACS, SportDiscus, Academic Search and Cinahl, Cochrane Library and
ScienceDirect databases including studies of the last 10 years that analyze the
prevention of hamstring injuries through eccentric exercises in players of any category,
sex and age, with or without previous hamstring injury.
Results: A total of 11 articles were analyzed. They showed through their program a
reduction of injuries and recurrences’ rate, in addition to an improvement of strength
and the Eccentric Peak Torque and an increase in the H/Q Ratio. In all the studies the
subjects were men, except one in which women were studied. In the majority of the
studies the Nordic Hamstring Exercise was used as the main treatment.
Conclusion: The effectiveness of eccentric exercise in the prevention of hamstring
injuries in footballers has been demonstrated, especially the Nordic Hamstring Exercise.
The results obtained in terms of incidence, reaffirm its effectiveness. However, the
results obtained of strength and its variables are not conclusive.
