[eng] Arabidopsis thaliana is a small plant of the Brassicaceae family distributed on all continents. It is also a model organism in the field of plant biology and possibly the most studied plant species. However, it is not a common species in the Balearic Islands, with the the most part of the populations described in the Serra de Tramuntana in Majorca and in coastal areas of Menorca. The reasons for their distribution could be related to the type of stress. One of the factors that could limit the ability of Arabidopsis to colonize could be the presence of high concentrations of carbonates or salts in the medium. This work characterizes the in vitro growth and development of two Arabidopsis Balearic populations in moderately saline and carbonate conditions. The evolution of different physiological and biochemical parameters was monitored throughout the plant cycle. The results of this study show that Balearic genotypes have a good in vitro response to saline and alkaline media, and therefore it can not be concluded that these mediums are the ones that limit the distribution of the species in the Islands Balearic Islands.
