[eng] Introduction. The WHO establishes, in February 2019, that epilepsy is a major public health problem. It usually has a good control with antiepileptic drugs, but around 30% of people, do not respond to pharmacological treatment. There are treatments, through surgery and experimental, that only a few can access. The application of the ketogenic diet can be an adequate alternative for those to whom the treatment is not feasible.
Objectives. To analyze if the ketogenic diet, applied in children, helps to reduce epileptic seizures that are resistant to drugs, as well as to know its mechanism of action and the effects it may have after its application in children.
Methodology. A bibliographic search was carried out between January and April 2019.
The databases were used: EBSCOhost, Pubmed, BVS and Google Scholar using the specific descriptors. The criteria have taken into account: year (2000-2018), children / adolescents (1-18 years) and articles (Spanish, English and Portuguese) and all those who have not met these criteria have excluded.
Results. 256 articles have been identified, which after carrying out a critical reading, 28 articles have been selected.
Conclusion. The ketogenic diet can be considered as an option that helps reduce seizures in refractory epilepsies. However, there is limited evidence and most studies published in humans are of poor methodological quality. It requires more research, more population sample and longer duration to confirm its effectiveness.
