Improving recreational demand modelling for environmental policy needs. A study of Mallorcan forests

Abstract

[eng] In the last fifty years, the Travel Cost Method (TCM) has evolved from simple zonal demand models to theoretically and econometrically sophisticated variants of the well-know discrete choice models. However, although the method is now a robust tool producing useful estimates of the recreational benefits accruing to users of natural areas, many problems have not yet been convincingly resolved within the literature. This thesis provides a rich insight to three of these topics in an attempt of overcoming the current limitations of the TCM and, at the same time, provide enhanced information contributing to the environmental policy debate. In this way, the measurement and representation of environmental diversity, the estimation of aggregate demands for large geographical areas and the consideration of preference heterogeneity among recreators have been investigated using a TCM application to forest recreation in the Island of Mallorca (Spain).

[cat] En els darrers cinquanta anys, el Mètode del Cost del Viatge (MCV) ha evolucionat des dels simples models de demanda zonal fins a les variants més sofisticades teòricament i economètricament dels coneguts com a models d’elecció discreta. Tal vegada, tot i que el mètode és avui una eina robusta que produeix estimacions útils dels serveis recreatius que obtenen els usuaris de determinades àrees naturals, encara queden diversos problemes que no han estat resolts de manera convincent per la literatura. Aquesta tesi aprofundeix en tres d’aquests temes en un intent de superar les actuals limitacions del MCV i, al mateix temps, aportar informació per a contribuir al debat al voltant de la política mediambiental. D’aquesta manera, s’investiga la mesura i representació de la diversitat ambiental, l’estimació de demandes agregades per a grans àrees geogràfiques i la consideració de la heterogeneïtat en les preferències dels individus mitjançant una aplicació del MCV a les activitats recreatives desenvolupades als boscos de l’illa de Mallorca (Espanya).
