evaluar a 177 estudiantes universitarios.
[eng] Social motives and those related to achieving changes at emotional level seem to be the most
prevalent in young adults according to several studies. Individuals that use maladaptive
emotion regulation (ER) strategies (such as emotional suppression) use alcohol more
frequently and with higher associated risks. The aim of this study was to investigate the
relationship between alcohol consumption, drinking motives and emotion regulation strategies
in college students. A sample of 177 college students were evaluated using the AUDIT, the
ERQ and the MDMQ-R. Results showed that the most frequent drinking reasons are social,
enhancement and coping motives. These motives were related to higher alcohol consumption
and AUDIT higher total scores. However, the use of ER strategies was not related neither
with drinking motives nor higher alcohol use. Considering the inconsistency with previous
studies, further research is needed.
