La fotografia social americana a la segona meitat del segle XX: Stephen Shames

[cat] Els fotògrafs socials són aquells capaços de trobar espais, llocs i comunitats del món que necessiten ajuda o suport i que empren la fotografia com a eina de denuncia o visibilització. En aquest treball intentarem definir aproximadament aquest concepte de fotografia social a partir d’una aproximació a les seves característiques i als seus antecedents històrics. L’estudi del context històric i social nord-americà dels anys 60, 70 i 80 ens servirà per veure les temàtiques socials que fonamenten l’obra fotogràfica de molts autors, entre ells el fotògraf documental Stephen Shames (Massachusetts, 1947) que ha realitzat durant dècades projectes que s’engloben dins l’activisme polític negre o dins la pobresa infantil d’arreu d’Amèrica.

[eng] Social photographers are those who are able to find places and communities in the world in need of help or support, using photography as a tool to report or make these issues visible. This paper pretends to define social photography as a concept approaching to its characteristics and its historical background. The analysis of the American history and its social context along the 60s, 70s and 80s will help to identify the social themes which underlie the photographic work of many authors, including the documentary photographer Stephen Shames (Massachusetts, 1947) who has been carrying out projects to show black political activism or child poverty across America for decades.
