La circularidad en la epistemología de virtudes de E. Sosa

Abstract

[spa] Toda teoría del conocimiento que se precie debe ser capaz de reaccionar ante el escepticismo de forma satisfactoria: debe proporcionar una definición del conocimiento, determinar su alcance y límites y establecer un criterio para diferenciar lo que lo es de lo que no. El propósito del presente trabajo es doble. En primer lugar, se expondrán los rasgos generales de la epistemología de virtudes de E. Sosa para determinar que se trata de una postura epistemológica por derecho propio, puesto que cuenta con características, conceptos y criterios que no pueden reducirse a versiones de posturas antecedentes más clásicas. Asimismo, se estudia si la teoría puede hacer frente a los escenarios escépticos del sueño o las variantes de los casos de Gettier. En segundo lugar, se examinará el papel de la circularidad en el seno de dicha teoría y se investigarán tres argumentos esgrimidos por el propio Sosa para defenderla como algo epistémicamente virtuoso.

[eng] Every valuable theory of knowledge must be able to give a proper answer to skepticism: it must provide a definition for knowledge, it must set its range and limits, and it also has to establish criteria to distinguish between what is knowledge and what is not. The aim of this dissertation is double. Firstly, our aim isto show the general traits of E. Sosa’s Virtue Epistemology in order to establish that it is a genuine epistemic approach in its own right, as it has its own features, concepts and criteria, and it can’t be reduced to just a version of a more classical approach. We will also study if the theory can confront skeptic scenarios as the dream scenario or Gettier-like variants. Secondly, we will try to examine the role of circularity in the theory itself, and we will look into three different arguments used by Sosa himself to defend this circularity as epistemically virtuous.
