How the evolution of the tourism sector has created convergence between countries

Abstract

[eng] The tourism industry is one of the major forms of economic contribution for a country. In the present study, two groups of European countries which have historically grown in different ways are analysed. As expected, convergence is demonstrated by the convergence analysis and economic growth is proved. The paper is complemented with statistical data, which shows that this economic growth has a direct relation with the effects of the tourism development. However, further analysis has shown that certain levels of touristic specialisation, stands in the way of development of other sectors, causing a financial standstill. Consequently, I conclude highlighting that the diversification of the economic structure of a country is of vital importance if a country wants to achieve a sustainable economic growth.

[spa] La industria turística es una de las mayores formas de contribución económica para un país. En el siguiente estudio, dos grupos de países europeos, que han evolucionado económicamente de forma distinta, son analizados con el objetivo de demostrar que actualmente existe convergencia entre ellos. Este acercamiento, es demostrado a través del análisis de convergencia y, además, se analiza el crecimiento económico que estos han experimentado. El artículo se complementa con datos estadísticos, que demuestran el crecimiento económico y la relación directa que tiene el desarrollo del turismo sobre ello. Sin embargo, algunas investigaciones apuntan a que ciertos niveles de especialización turística no permiten la evolución de otros sectores, generando por ello un estancamiento económico. Como conclusión podemos destacar que la diversificación económica es necesaria para un país, si este quiere conseguir un crecimiento económico sostenible.
