a Baleares.
[eng] The general objective of this final degree project is to analyze the weight of
British tourism in the tourism sector of the Balearic Islands compared to other
nationalities, studying its relative importance and its evolution over time. As
secondary objectives, this work pursues first, to describe the strategies of the
tourism sector and destination management organizations (DMOs) to promote
and enhance British tourism in Spain and the Balearic Islands; second, to
analyze the effects of Brexit on British tourism to the Balearics; and third, to
analyze the impacts of the fall of Thomas Cook on British tourism to the
Balearic Islands.
To achieve these objectives, different data sources have been used on tourist
arrivals from the FRONTUR survey and spending and average stay from the
EGATUR survey, both from IBESTAT. These variables have been studied from
2004 to 2020, taking into account the data from the economic crisis of 2007-
2009 and the impact of COVID-19 in 2020. The strategies followed by the
sector to boost British tourism and the impact of Brexit on the tourism sector in
the Balearic Islands are also analyzed. The results indicate that British tourism
ranks as the second most important country in the Balearic Islands, in terms of
arrivals and total expenditure, while in terms of average stay it ranks as the
fourth country.
