Análisis del método compositivo de Bob Mintzer a través de sus obras para Big Band “The art of the Big Band” y “Ancestors”

Abstract

[spa] En esta tesis se analizan algunas de las técnicas compositivas de Bob Mintzer en relación a sus obras para big band “The Art of the Big Band” y “Ancestors”. El objetivo principal es extraer la información y las herramientas que nos permitan adoptar un estilo compositivo e improvisatorio basado en Bob Mintzer. En primer lugar se estudia cómo están estructurados los temas, observando qué roles asigna Mintzer a cada instrumento y de qué manera utiliza la repetición de secciones con variaciones para dotar a la obra de direccionalidad. En segundo lugar se analiza exhaustivamente el papel de la escala pentatónica en las dos composiciones – incluyendo “Trane’s Blues”, una tercera obra de la cual también se extrae valiosa información –, llegando a comprender la versatilidad de dicha escala y cómo, planteándola desde diferentes puntos de vista, se consigue desarrollar obras completas partiendo de una base puramente pentatónica. Además se menciona cómo a través de dicha escala se consiguen sonoridades y armonías muy concretas y complejas de una manera muy sencilla. Por último el estudio se centra en la parte rítmica de estas composiciones, ahondando en la importancia del desarrollo motívico, piedra angular de “The Art of the Big Band”, y de cómo éste es planteado por Mintzer. Además se exponen otros dos conceptos empleados en “Ancestors”: zoom rítmico y desplazamientos. Éstos ayudan a que la música genere interés sin necesidad de cambiar la armonía o el discurso melódico. En resumen, mediante esta tesis se extraen las técnicas compositivas más relevantes de Bob Mintzer en relación a la forma, la armonía y el ritmo, de cara a acercarnos a su estilo compositivo e implementarlo en nuestra propia forma de componer e improvisar.

[eng] Throughout this project some of Bob Mintzer’s composing techniques have been analyzed, in relation to his big band compositions “The Art of the Big Band” and “Ancestors”. The main goal is to extract information and tools which let us adopt a composing and improvising style base on Mintzer’s characteristics. First of all the structure of the compositions is studied, focusing on the role of each instrument and how does the composer use the repetition of sections to give the piece a certain sense. Secondly, the role of the pentatonic scale in these compositions – including “Trane’s Blues”, another Mintzer composition in which the pentatonic scale has an important role – is examined, showing its versatility and how, when used both melodically and harmonically, a composition based almost just on pentatonic scales can be created. Also, by using this scale, complex harmonies can be achieved in an easy way. Last but not least this project covers the importance of the rhythm in terms of composition. Three aspects are studied: the motivic development, cornerstone of “The Art of the Big Band”, rhythmic displacement and rhythmic zoom – these last two appear mainly on “Ancestors” and they are really useful in terms of creating scenarios of tension and release. In summary, several composing techniques which characterize Bob Mintzer have been studied in order to approach his composing and improvising style based on structure, harmony and rhythm.
